A tragio and unusual circumstance occurred hero to-day. : At tho Polico Court ■this morning Joseph Robsou, a young, ablebodied man, pleaded guilty to a' chargo of being idle and disorderly, and.witbout sufficient means of support. 7 ■ Sub-Inspector Norwood said that tho man " came into - tho police station ■ on ! Saturday night and said' lie could not get work. He / had^been ; ,beggipg.Vabout,.the . streets, and, . being .in indigent circumstanccs, ho. wished to bo. locked up. The police sont him away, ■ but accused again', returned, and desired to bo, looked up. Accused' stated that ho was in debt of £12 to a boardine- , houso.keeper, in; Oaniaru.- ' The/police could not understand how accused could not get work,as there was plenty of employment to bo -,got. , Apparently .tho man: did not like work, anil, in fact, had said as.much. Accused denied saying this. The Magistrate considered .tho man's state was, tho result of drink, and if accused would .place himself in the hands of Mr. Cummings, of..the: Sahation Army, he would be convicted, and ordered to,como up for sentence When- called upon, otherwise ho would havo to go to gaol;for three months. Accused expressed his .willingness to go to work, and left in Mr. Cummings's charge. ' Later in the day, about two o'clock, tho body of a.man was brought in by tho Port .Chalmers train.,,-It had . becn jjickcd-up by tho guard of . this train near Raverrebourno lying- on the line. Tho decoased had boon a .passenger. by the second Christchurch ex- . press, which left Dunedin at 1.26 p.m. When rtcarmg. Ravpnsbourne, ■ two; passengers saw him mako a jump from tho platform on which ho was standing;-and fall between'the carnages On the tram stopping at Port t.nalmers blood was noticed on tho wheel of ono of tho carriages The- body was subsequently identified as that of Joseph Robson, .■ the -.young--, man.who had been before tile ; .
