A WOMAN AND HER HAIRPIN.
Dear. Dominica,—Much as. I was 'impressed by your admirablo articlo on ."A, Man and his Pockets,". it did' not quite, convince me that one hairpin could be a tolerable':s'ubstituto for my. twelve pockets and their contents. But you shall read how I : was converted. I asked a lady, who had: read your article,.to■ lend me a hairpin, "as I,wanted: to sharpen my pencil. I thought that simple request, would show- her once ;fi>r all the pitiablo ineffectiveness of woman's'.vaunted tool, J implement, and weajjon.' , Biit' the' lady quietly- said; " Give mo tho pencil.";' Then, drawing a hairpin from the soft resting-place; which did it too much honour,-sho 'pne : point of it to break away a little-of the wood: from around tho point'of tho pencil—and I could use it. again., It was sharpened quite enough for riiy purposes.; I was answered, convinced, confounded. I will now believe anything, you,- may state qn tho. merits of. hairpins. My next l uso'.of the pencil which had been honoured by/this . r&hark'able demonstration shall " bo to subscribe myself . i . ■ i-v \ '< ■ THE "MEREST.
