' March 23.—Otago Regatta. , ' March. 24.— N.Z. Championships (Napier). . A general meeting 'of thoso'"holding' sub-, scription lists connected with tho canvass for the necessary funds/ for.- tho - Wellington Regatta, was held on Thursday night, and very satisfactory, progress was ; reported. Tho Executivo can now push matters along without that uneasy feeling that the sinews : of war will bo lacking, and -though *tho prize money, offered ; for. competition- cannot bo called munificent,' it is : :.still, onoiigh 'to attract sufficient entries' to 1 make tho racing interesting. . . . .-. .- -
Ihe Star __Club crews, for. ~tbo annual i. l ltzgerald lours competition havo W drawn, and are now m- as vigorous, training as the weather will-permit,... I'he'raci.ng'was to have taken place this, afternoon, but'.ou account of - the championship athletic sports at til p. Basin Reserve the nxture has-, beenfor. Monday, and succeeding tine nights: _ The entry list-was a largo' one, ten crews being engaged, and consequently tho ultimate winning - combination is l hard:to picu. On paper, however, lam inclined to rancy the chances of two crews, viz.:—Davis (stroke),; "Williams, Newboid, and Gibbons: and D. Brewer (stroke!,,' L.'Bridge, Dudley and Harper. . . _'
• (During l the week this Club's youths' anC maiden creiva had an 1 unonicial flutter'over the mile course, and tho latter crew, which had X. Bridge rowing No. "2-as suustituto for Seward, rather flattered its supporters by sticking to the" youths; tbro'ugnout the journey. _ /h 0 difference at tho finish was a uare.half. length in favour 6t ; tlie'youths, a result that might :have beeii reversed had not tho maiden's oow "crabbed", badly, near tho business end. Tho winning "crew seem to ho rowing well together/ but from this would appear to lack pace enough -for the higher grade it will bo appearing in at the Christ, cnurch regatta, at winch tho Club is entering it for tho junior - as-.well as for tho youths' race. Turnbull, tho stroke, seems to lack his old-time dash,. and appears unablo to quicken as required in a finish, a failing lie might rectify oy putting in somo spurting practice over distances up to half a milo two or three times a week.' s
Gerald Fell, the' Star. Club's, representative for tho sculling championship, lias been putting in a lot of long useful rowing from the Tliorndon shed.- ho sits his boat, well, and is showing very correct stylo, but lacks flrivo in his stroke. His grip of the waiter at ,present is not nearly, smart enough, tho result being that his blades are past his ■rigger before tho work is applied, which of •course detracts greatly- from liis pace,: whilo his finish, also lacks, ginger. - Consequently tho boat does not seem /to jump off his hands as it should. These defects notwithstanding, his sculling as a wholo is showing a great advanco on his previous seasons' eiforts and gives every promiso of a creditable performance."
Latest advices fronC.. Sydney about e-t champion Chnrlio Towns state, that ho is giving the water-a. rest, for'-a goodly period. at least, even if not for good, and lias gono on to tho land for a .'living as a dairy farmer; though report says ;that at times even a dairy farmer is altogether independent of the former olomeiit..
"I have here," said, tho long-haired visitor, "a littlo poem on spring." "All right," answered tho editor, "'leave it. I'll publish it. Nothing we can do to' spring will bo too cruel after tho ' experience we've had this year." "You can answer mo one more question, perhaps, Miss Bute," said Archie, mortified at her refusa: "Is thero any other man?" "Thero is every other man, sir!" she responded, with flashing, eyes. "You would be absolutely the last, Mr. Foathertop I" As there appeared to bo no further business before the ■ house, Archio hastily adjourned without, form. v "Yes," s#id old Roxley, "my daughter is to bo married next month to. Lord Brokeleigb." "All 1" remarked the friend, "everything's settled, eh?" "Well, I guess not! You don't ketch me paying in advance."
