. The Law-Scholarship.'Committed reported: J . That tho-Senior Scholarships Examination in Law shall bo held at the same timo as tho examination for Honours in Law, and shall be open only at the'time of tho first 01' second Examination for Honours which iii held after the dato upon which the candidate passes the final .examination for the degree of Bachelor of Laws. 2. That the subjects of examination shall be—(l) Human Law: (?.) The' Law of Contract and Tort (English Law); (3)-the Law of Real Pro-
pcrtv (Now Zealand Law), and that tho Papers shall bo the Honours Papers in each subject. The report was adopted. SCIENCE REPORT. An interim report- of tho Science Committee was adopted as follows: — 1. Tho Committee, having considered Professor Malcolm's suggestion that Physiology bo included in tho Science subjects for tho B.Se. degree, reports Unit Physiology is a siiitablo subject for inclusion in tho 15.Sc. degree. ; !2. Tho Committee recommends that the Senate accede to tho request- from the Institution of Civil Engineers (London) '' that, as qualifying for the studentship of tho Institution, tho condition of keeping a year's terms before passing tho Entranco Examination," bo relaxed. It further recommends -that'.the following note bo added after paragraph- o of Section IX of ,tho Statute, " The Degree of Bacholor of Engineering "—Candidates for tho profession of engineering may'bo'admitted'to tho Entranco Examination in Engineering, and shall not' be required to keep terms at an affiliated college; hut such , candidates shall be required to fulfil all tho other.conditions of tho examination. ,The. passing of: the. examination in such' manner.'.' shall not be deemed to be the passing of the Entranco Examination iti Engineering as' prescribed f<jr a Degree in Engineering. " - 3. The Committeo recommends that to tho definition of Honour# in Chemistry on page 106 of the Calendar thero be added the sentence —"The* credit to be assigned to this thesis! shall not so much depend on tho novelty or importance of the results obtained as Upon the evideiico it may afford of ability to. carry on good-practical work and of the | powoi' of indeppndout observation."4. ' Tho Committeo recommends that tho j practical, work for Honours in- Chemistry should be more fully defined, and that Professor Eastorfield's suggested definition and the suggestion of- tho AucMand Professorial Board, that the definition of Chemistry for all. University examinations Should /be re- . vised and amplified, bo referred to the Professors of Chemistry of the affilated colleges 'for.consideration and that they he asked to report to tho Senate at its next-session. ; 5; The Committee finds itself unable to make, any' report on -thd/'question as "to whether a-thesis should be'/required for Ijfouours in Physics. . 1 . The dissertatio'n' shall be submitted to the Examiner in that branch of study with which it deals, and lie shall state whether in his opinion it is of sufficient merit to entitle tbo .candidiit'o to tlio'degree. Tho Senate, reserves to itself,the right to submit the dissertation also to other examiners, and to examine tho candidate, orally or Otherwise, upon tho subject matter of tho dissertation. . - • 7. Tho feo' for the examination of tho dissertation shall bo one guinea, subject to tlio provisions of tlio Statute "Conduct of Lnivorsitv ■ Examinations."- ' -. 8* l'f tho candidate obtains the degree, tho dissertation shall not bo recognised for tlio purpose of obtaining certificates, medals, Honours, or any other degree granted by tlio Univorsity.
9. The word "Research" shall be inserted in tlio diploma after the words "Bachelor of Science," to indicate the course pursued in obtaining that degree. 10. No student shall be-allowed to take the course prescribed in this Statute unless it bo certified bv the teacher Of the repeated subject in an' Affiliated College that lie is competent to pursue research ill it. The recommendation to submit the proposed Statute to Professorial Hoards was adopted.
Professor Slinwl thru withdrew his motion 'or the abolition of the R.Sc. "B" degree. NO MILITARY BRILL. The Military Drill Committee reported that it, hud considered the memorandum frorii tlio Council of Defence, and is not prepared t,o recommend that-efficiency in military drill and rifle shooting bo accepted as a candidate from any subject of tlio Matriculation or .IVA. examinations. If. liowcvcr, a practical scheme cau be devised under which the University can in any way promote efficiency in military subjects, the jommittce thinks that the Senate should s;ivo it favourable consideration. To this end the conimittco suggest tho . Chancellor should confer with tho Council of Defence, and bring tho matter up for consideration at tho next meeting of tho Sonnto.
