AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
THE WELLINGTON CENTRE. A 'meeting ®f, ihe Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic 'Association was held in the T.M.C.A. rooms last evening. There were present Messrs. R. W. ■ M'Villy (in tho chair), A. 'Davie.*, W. F. Larkin, J. M. Hogben, J. Ileenan, W. Coffer, M. Barnett, ,T. Callighan, C. E. Bridge, I'. M'Qrath, F. Ross, F. H. i'ollock, S. Kobinsoii, L. C. Varton, W. G. Talbot, and B. Guise, Hon. See. Referring to certain new rules passed by the Council Mr. Davies entered a protest against the Counoil passing new rules and thrusting them on the Centres, Mr. Coffey considered the matter could bo thoroughly thrashed out at the Conference of Centres 011 Snturday morning. It was pointed out that tho Centre had protested against the rules being passed before they were considered at the meeting of Centres, and it was resolved that the delegates to the Conference should enter an emphatic protest against tho Council passing tho rules before they had been discussed by tho Conforence, . Tho Hibernian Society' and Catholic Young Men's Club asked for permission to hold iv sports meeting on the Basin Reservo on March H. The Chairman ruled that the application could not bo entertained on account of tho existing rule of the Centre that pnlv,.threo meetings were to bo held 011 the Basin Reserve, and that .these meetings must be. managed directly by, tho Centre. To enable, the application to be entertained, and also to'give other affiliated clubs an opportunity-of applying for the right to hold meetings on the Busin Reserve, Mr. Reenan gavo notice of his intention to move at the next;meeting that the previous motion bo rescinded, and that all affiliated clubs be asked to make application for, dates. It was decided to aslc the Hutt Valley A.A.C. for an explanation of their failure to apply to the Centre for permission to hold their evening meeting 011 Jnnuary 24, and also !to call the attention of the Nelson A.A.C. to the fact that UlO Centre has received no npplicar tion for permission to hold a meeting on February 1, as advertised in- the Press. Mr. Larkin suggested that before the Centre should appoint a judge of walking contests, it should take every eare to see that tho appointee was. a thoroughly competent judge. The Chairman agreed with Mr. Larkin's view. : Mr. T. W, Leslie was appointed to act as jud?o of tho walking at the jf.M.C.A. meeting to be held on Wednesday noxt.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. From present, appearances only favourable weather is required for the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's Championship sports gathering on the Basin Reserve tomorrow to lie a great success. Additional interest is lent to tho meeting fi'om the fact that Messrs. Bntehelor, Green, and Oliver, members of tho N.Z.A.A. Council, will be present to select a team, to represent the Dominion at the Australasian Amateur Athletic Championship Carnival at Hobart next month. New -Zealand's biist amateur athletes have been draining hard during the pa6t three months 'in view of a trip lo Hobart, and those competing to-morrow include, with one exception (Hector Burlc), the best amateurs New Zealand, can produce. The New Zealand Championship Challenge Shield, which is at present held by Wellington, will also bo coiltested for. The Wellington team, which includes J. Wallace, Henderson, L. M'lCay, Thomassen, I'isher, and Cook (all present champions), together with W. H. Pollock (an ex-champion), P. W. Goodbehere. H. Kerr (one mile record holder), P. Wilton (harrier champion), Tom Stubbs, and W. Gosling (ex-cham-pion reps.), A. A. Burge, and M. Mulcahy, should scorn well all along the line. The Canterbury team is headed by H. Murray (HO yards 'hurdles champion), C. Ij. Orbell (high jump champion), and P. IT. Situbber'ield (exchampion walker). Other members of tho team arc U. Bass, G. L. Anderson, I). MThnil, 1!. F. Mitchell, and S. W. Moore, all useful men, and several championships should be secured by tho team. The Auckland is represented by W. 11. Madill (ex-champion hammer 'thrower "and holder of _the N.Z. record), E. M'lCay and S. ,1. Martin (two good inen in field events). Otngo's representatives are mostly distance men. T\ Mace, D. M'Farlane, J. Bc'atson, J. P. Frew, and T. I). Claughton belong to harrier dubs, nnil should run prominent in the distance events. Southland is represented by W. J. Trembath and 1!. Bust. The former has established some fine performances during the post, few weeks, and his admirers expect him to win the half and quarter-mile championships. His companion, Bust, will compete in the 410 yards hurdles championship. Visitors to the Basin Keservo to-morrow should witness some exciting contests. A conference of delegates representing the various centves of the N'.Z. Amateur Athletic Association will be held at Bntkin's Rooms at !) a.m. to-morrow. Messrs. Batchelor and Green, representing the Council, will be in Attendance, and confer with delegates on questions connected with tho welfare of amateur athletics.
