Haggerty. 1 ; Tho' Returning Offiier (Mr.- George Htilop) presided,? readying the formal notices, asked tfie Councillors to elect their chairman.- ;■ »- ■■ Mr. Bryant said that; as.the. Jlakarii people had taken the leading part,'in/the uidvement for a new county, they were-entitled ti) have the first chiiirma'n. He moved that Mr. Hawkins, bo' Chairman. i-- r.; .•• .. . . This was seconded by ; :Mr. .Haggcrty.. Mr. Hawkins moveil, . and Mr. ; Moore seconded, that Mr. Monk tJikfe thei'chair. On a vote being, taken, Hawkins was elected by three votes', to ;iwp,. ,In , assuming tho chair, 'Mr. Hawkins- asked for the consideration of his fellow-.Councillors, as such a position was new to him. Mr. G- Hislop ' was appointed clerk to- the County Council, the questiojivof remuneration being postponed, pending an Arrangement being made as to offices of „tl|o. Council. It was- resolved: "That all. the .members of tho Council wait upon the!Hutt-.County.Coun-cil at its nest meeting to .negotiate for . the use of an office and Board room in tho Hutt County Council's building, and to discuss the amount of refund .of rates for the current year." .It was pointed oiit that■ the Porirua and Makara Ridings. had contributed about <£2000 to tho cost of the office building, but owing' to the terms oil lfhich the • property was held they could not '.expect to; obtain compensation in money. .. It was also explained that the. new County would take over the funds of the Makara Road Board, which had become merged in the Council, but would have nol funds from, the Porirua. Riding until a; refund was obtained from the Hutt County Council;;.-' ; . . It was resolved to reinstate roadmen. Field, Mepliam, Greer, London, and.-Barnes for the Porirua Riding, and to invite applications for roadmen for the Ohariu, -Roa'd", .and the Hutt Road. . ,:' At the suggestion of Mr.--Moote, the' chiiirman and clerk were ■ authorised to make arrangements with the National Bank for an overdraft. !•'.-: 1 It was agreed to hohl the next- meeting, at tho Hutt County Council olEcof' on Saturday, February S, and a special : ',mcetihg after, the conference with the nii.tt , County Council, and thereafter to meet on the second .'Saturdiy in each month. ; . On tho motion of Mr. Moore;. tlio. remuneration of the chairman was fixed',-it .£25 per annum, and Councillors one guinoa for. each meotiug. It was decided to endeavour to'lirrange with tho Hutt County Council in regard.' to the services of a ranger. •
