PENNY POSTAGE.

THE COMMONWEALTH. PROBABLE ADOPTION THIS YEAR. OY TELEGRAPH—riIIiSS ASSOCIATION—COPI'EIOnT. Sydney, January 29. 1 Tho Minister of Customs (Mr. Chapman) beliovos that tho Federal Parliament will pass penny postago rioxt session. AUSTRALIAN ANOMALIES. In 1906 it was' estimated by the Federal Postmnster-Genoral. that, if ponny postage woro established, ,tho [eduction in, the Commonwealth revenue from' October 1, 1900, to June 31), 1907, would amount to .£119,250 if it were limited to tho Gommonwoalth, and to .£135,000 if it woro oxtended to all places beyond. Tho figures, howover, wero .questioned. Tho. "Sydney Morning' Herald" points out that Australia' cannot honestly recommend penny postage'to tho world while sho has within her own borders such glaring anomalies in tho cost of sending letters. "Here in New South Wales we have a mixed arrangement of affairs. >.To certain, places and within certain radii a penny stamp carries a letter; but to/andfropi other places in the State a two-penny stamp must be affixed. South Australia is in, a still more uncomfortable position. If one drops a letter into a pillar-box for . a porson'in the next street one must pay twopence for tho carriage. Before wo begin to set tho paco for the world'in this matter of postage ive should set our own house in order.". •
