THE BUSH FIRES.
LOSS OF PROPERTY IN OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND. Dlincdin, .January 29. Advice reached Dunedin to-night that tho fires raging in tho Waipori district liavo destroyed several square miles of bush. Tlio nres apparently started on Witchcrs Bros', run on the opposite side of the river to tlio Waipori electrical power works, but sparks wero carried across tho water and fires are now 1 burning on both sides of tho river. The outbreak started this .afternoon and had- not bcori suppressed when latest advice was received. Tho Corporation Bar'racks liavo been practically destroyed, also a cottage and stable, almost everything contained therein being lost. Tho barracks arc insured for £100.' The power station is said to bo well removed from the danger zone, but mon al'e being kept on tlio watch all night. Invercarglll, January 29. Bush fires raged fiercely round Otautau: township yesterday. Harrington Bros', saw-/ millj ii'long stretch of tramway, and a considerable area of virgin bush have been destroyed. A change of wind saved tlio Southland' Timber Company's mill.
