OPOUITI TRAGEDY.
THE INQUEST.' . (D 7 TELEGRAPH—rIIESS ASSOCIATION.) Wairoa, January 28. There aro no additional particulars regarding tho Opouiti tragedy, in which David Irwin waylaid Miss Brownlee and her escort, A. E. Stevens, shot at them,, and then committed suicide. At tho inquest on Irwin the following verdict was returned: "Died by a gunshot wound, self-inflicted, during tompora'ry insanity." The roport "that jealousy was supposed t-o bo tho cause of tho tragedy was unfounded. .Tlio injured man, Stevens, who was grounded in tho arm, is progressing satisfactorily. Tho weapon usod by Irwin was not a reyoiror, but a fowling piece, which wes deliberately reloaded after, cncli shot.
Tho R.M.S. Athenic will leave the Glasgow wharf, to-morrow for London at 3 p.m. Passengers aro notified accordingly. At the Mount Cook Police Court yesterday, before Mr. .1. Cooftan, .T.P., four first offenders were fined 5?., or 2t hours' imprisonment. One first offender was convicted and discharged, and Frederick Arnold, an habitual drunkard, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
