IN OTHER CENTRES.

(BT TEI.IGIt.U'It—SrZCIAL COUItKI'ONDENTS.)

AUCKLAND. . •/ ' January. 27. The number of eases of typhoid oiVenteric lever in Auckland has been increased by tho addition of a case from the Kden,Terrace district. During tho past two months three eases have occurred in this, district,, whilst during the same period-five cases hare litv-n ■reported from the Mount Eden Borough. The exporieiico of' these districts, and'snch other' districts as Newmarket, with their incomplete drainage systems,,when contrasted with tlm immunity of boroughs provided with an efficient drainage scheme, form, says the " Herald," one 'of the ' strongest possible' arguments in. favour of the carrying out ,of a Comprehensive drainago scheme such as, is' now being promoted by the City Council. Dcvenport, which installed a water carriage system some years ago, is shown .by this records at tho Health Department to havo been absolutely free from enteric for the. past three years. Parnell'also has had only one case during tho same period, Theso are facts which should be borne in mind by tho representatives of tho suburban bodies when ,the drainage Scheme comes, before them' for discussion. Apart from drainage, there are the almost . equally important questions of scavenging, refuso: removal and its destruction, a pure milk sup'ply, housing of the working people, the control of infectious diseases by'the adoption; of steam disinfection, so' strenuously advocated by tho energetic district health officer, and the many other pro--blends, which: can only be, satisfactorily solved ■by treating, them on a . broad basis under a body with wider powers of administrative cqntrp). Inspector'Grievej-of the Health Department, has just visited Herekino and Kerikcri, in-the north of, Auckland, in connec- ■ tion with- reported outbreaks of enteric.in those. districts. He reports that at Herekino there were only two cases,-one of-which proved fatal. At liorikeri'tho outbreak was confined 'to, the .members of one household And two .'visitors to . the house.. The head .of tho family, who was removed to Auckland bpforo the case was' diagnosed as. enteric, died here. The three other-patients consist of his .daughter .and two visitors. Mr. Grieve, on arriving at,tho house,, found that tho. local inspector had taken'prompt steps' to'minimiso the spread of the disease. National Defence League. , The .different branches-of the National Dofence Leaguo having-, been consulted, WeV lington has been 'chosen'aa"the place where tho iirst annual conference should bo held. At a special meeting of . the Goneral' Council it was decided to suggest, to' the various bram/hes that Tuesday, April-21, would be a suitablo .date for the conference, and it is thought that' the .meeting will be a thoroughly representative one, and thatdelegates from all parts of the Dominion will bo present.. , ... Value of Property. 'Property in tho vicinity of Auckland City' has been- advancing in value during the last few years at a very rapid rate, and:there, have been numerous transactions in suburban' lands, for which high-figures have boon paid. A recent transaction was the sale of the well-known pah property, Epsom, of 50 acres, ori which are St. John's Cojlegiate (School and accessory buildings, for the total sum of £12,000, tho purchaser heirig Mr. 6. T.-Bay-ly, of New Plymouth.' -It is now about'five years since the propertT was bought bv tho Rev. P. S. 1 SiSallfiold for £8000. The new purchaser has leased : tho Collego buildings; etc.; to,Mr, Smallfiold; who will cairy on the institution as-previously. -i■'
