reading yesterday's issue'of your 1 .'up-to-date paper I noticed a ; lcngthy account of thfcdariijg attempt, of that inalFerris' to escape from- Lyttelton"prison, together with a former, account of.a similar attempt made by his mate _ Sinclair' to escape from the; Wellington prison, and it is a matter vfor'genoral congratulation that 1 the Prisons'-Departmentj by' their vigilance, nipped, the'attempt-in the-hud. It is also . a ; matter for commendation that Magistrates Bishop,. and; Riddell meted out such exemplary t punishment. The daring attempts of these 1 ,-two desperadoes to escape elenrly stamp; them tn be of a dangerous type. Tlio citizens of Wellington should, r-rid from what I . have lioard from many of our commercial institutions;! do, feel thankful that ' their downfall i; ,was so speedily and ' cleverly brought abbut.
