SEMIOR MATCHES. SEMI-FINAL ROUND. Tho two matches in- tho semi-final round were begun on tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, when the conditions wero favourable. Much interest coutres in tho contests, which will extend over three Saturdays. If possible, tho final will bo played to a finish. WELLINGTON V. MIDLAND. The match between Wellington and Midland was commenced on No. 2 wicket, which was fairly fast. On tho previous occasion when these teams met Wellington gained a two-point' victory. Wellington "batted first, compiling 151, the score at the fall of each, wicket'being as follows:—One for 15, two for 15, three for 48, four for 72, five for 120, six for 123, soven for-130, eight tor 130, and nine for 131. WJillis, the top-scorer, I'gave a Creditable display. Hjs total, 31, included two o's—one .1 straight drive off Hiekson and tho other a stroke to long-on off Mitchell. Varo, who mado 23, had a j lively innings.' After securing a single, he hit Upham 011 to the liiind rotunda for 4, following this with, a ! magnificent drive to tho off tor six. A couplo of ovors later, ho hit Mitchell to leg for 5. After adding a single to his score, he skied to Upham at mid-011. Hiekson, who compiled 20, playod cautiously for tho most part. Richardson's innings was characterised by stone-walling tactics; it took him over an hour and a half to compile 17. The Wellingtonians were at tho wickots three hours. .For Midland, Mitchell secured fivo wickets for 47 runs and Upham fivo for 51. Mitchell, it is worthy of mention, bowled eighteen overs without a rest. Uphnin has not performed better this season, and his average would have been a much bettor ono if several catehos had not been missed. When slumps were drawn Midland had lost two wickots for 52 runs, tho first falling at 17 and tho second at 33. Hiekson had tho misfortuno to bo cauglit in tlio slips when'ho had made 4. Williams, the otlior player who lost his wioket, was well caught by Nash at long-ofT. Wvnyard, 3B (not but), gavo a first-class display. Following aro tho details:—WELLINGTON. First Innisos. Another^trial of strength' between;.Gas'Company and "Nowtown, wlio did riot qualify : for tho semi-final round, was' begun on No: 3 wicket, which was in -fairly' good' order. When these teams met, during the first round, Gas' Company achieved a.4-point win. Gas Company, who wont to the wicket's first, had not completed their .innings' at. the call of time, ilieir total being 352 for tho loss/of eight wickots. Tho number of runs at- the fall of ! ;oaioh wicket was as follows:—-Ono for 6, two lor 48, t-hreo for 48, four for 75, fivo for 89, six for. 169, seven !for 184, and ejght for 198. A remarkable feature 6f the innings wns tho partnership between Hodge and Spottiswoodo tor tho ninth wicket. Both aro not out-, tho formor having 74 to his crcdit and tho lattor 79. , So far, thb partnership lias, resulted in -tho augmentation of tho seoro;by 154 runs. 'It is understood that tho'previous bast rccord for a ninth wickot partnership in first-class cricket in Wellington was hokl by Jacobs and Fisher, of the Old Boys, who mado 101 between them in a match against Midland tho scatfon beforo last. Both liodge and Spottiswoodo hit freoly all round the wickot, treating all tho bowlers alike. During tho last hour the bowling was lamentably weak, and tho fielding poor. Spottiswoode,. who had -not previously earned distinction as a rnn-getter, gave at least a couplo of chances, and Hodge, whoso previous highest score this season was only 11, was also missed. Topp, who made 56, gavo more than a glimpse of his old form, his total including a 6 and a 5. Waters (49) also made his top soore for tho season. Ho was 0110 of tins first : pair, but, owing to an injury to his hund, had to rotiro, returning as seventh man. Tho partnership botweon Topp and Waters yielded 80 runs. Waugh (38) allowed somo balls to 20 dangerously into the slips. It is/probablo that when the existing partnership between Hodge and Spottiswoodo is dissolved, tho innings will bo conciudcd, as L. M'Kay, tho last man, may not bo available. For NeWtown, Tiiynrd, four wickets for 62 runs, obtained tho best bowling average. Ryan, who secured two for 82, bowled very well at first,' s only ten runs being gained oft his first ten ovors, fivo of which were maiden 6, Following aro tho details:— GAS COMPANY. Ijnsi Innings. .
