TO WASH CURTAINS.
Rubbing heavy lace curtains causes a strain on the thinner threads and soon breaks them. Shake the curtains free, from dust and put to soak in lukewarm water, aud use all the powdered. borax you wish, for borax will not injure tl\o most delieate fabric: it cleanses and whitens all material. Sprinkle the; powder through the curtains, wet thoroughly and roll tightly. .Dot this to every curtain and cover with water. Leave several hours, then press the curtains out of the foamy suds and put into a good soapsuds of warmer water. Press with the hands and roll on the board rather than wash with the up-and-down motion, unless great care is .taken in tho usual washing process. Kinse in warm water and run through, warm starch. Place evenly on a line and when dry have someone help starch them. Fold the curtains from side to side, draw out all scallops and iron them dry without, sprinkling them. They will be clean, straight, ami look new. Another good method is to wash them in a washing machine and use a great quantity-of water, which can he easily drawn off. While curtains can lie mended, a weakened spot soon breaks again, and care should be taken to wash them carefully and avoid curtain stretchers. for only the comnvm variety. The Maiden Insurance Company is a singular Denmark institution. It is eonlined to tho nobility. The nobleman, as soon as a daughter is born to' him, enrolls her name on the company's books, and pays in a certain sum, and thereafter an annual amount to tho treasury. When the girl is twenty-one she is entitled to a fixed income, and to an elegant suite of apartments until she, either marries or dies.—" Philadelphia Bulletin."
