' -Inter-club matches ,started again last Saturday! Khandallali did not-.fulnl its promise of earlier in the.season, and went down, badly to Brougham Hill, being'defeated by ten sets- to ' three. . ; Holdsworth started well, and soon Jed H." Howe 4—l, ..Howe is-not a good starter, and found the-net much too often in' the earlier'part of tlio match. Ho, however, settled .down,, and .by steady play made the score 5 all. At this stage-Holds-worth seemed to go off, and; although he put up a hard fight, only took one more game,: Howe winning 9—6.. Watkins was playing' at his best, and had lio difficulty in disposing of-Fleming. Maddox's style of play.did not suit Richardson. The former player keeps the balls very low, with a lot of cut on-them,, and. unless lifted they frequently go into the net. The Brougham Hill player tobk the lead at 5—4, and eventually the set at 9—5. Marriner played his best game this season against Jones. He'got away, at the start, and never gave his opponent' a chance t<i catch ■him. Jones has been seen to much better advantage in some of his previous matches, and this player, will do well to strengthen his second service, which is a very weak point. Miss Cock's free style and hard drives won her game, comfortably from Miss Archer. The latter has improved a great deal of late, and will do still better when she overcomes'her-nervousness. Miss Batham was far too strong for Miss Arthur, and won without her opponent securing a game. Miss Arthur is quite a young player, and has some very nice cross-court drives, wliieh slio scored with in the match. With a little more experience and good practice this young lady will do much bettor. Howe and AVatkins led S—o from Holdsworth and Fleming, when the latter pair, mainly througli Holdsworth's excellent work at tho net, took the next three games, making the score 8 all. Watkins had the next service, and rattled the balls in, making no mistakes, and winning a lovo game. Mnddox and Herd soon took the load from Richardson and Jones, and maintained it. Herd did some very successful smashing at the net. Marriner "and Sampson (the latter playing emergency) had an easy win from Cockayne and Mackay. Miss Archer and Mrs. Burton put up a good fight against Misses Cock and Bntham, but the Khandallali ladies .scored another victory. This pair have not yet been defeated in the cup contest. 'Misses Arthur and Morgan put up a very good performance in defeating Misses' Richardson and
Pago. Miss Page plays a very attractive game,'and will certainly , strengthen • 'the Khandallah team.Herd and Mrs. Burton met with little resistance from Cockayne and Miss Richardson. Mrs. Burton played with much success at tho net, and her inclusion in the cup, team must strengthen it. -Sampsou and Miss Morgan' were run very close by Mackay and Miss Page. This win caine to Brougham Hill chiefly : through Sampson's well-judged poaching. . Wellington defeated ICarori by nine sets to 'four. M'Nicol • could make no headway against Smythe, who smashed particularly well, and took the set heforc his opponent got started. Ward* and Downes had a good go; but the former was on his game,, and took the set 9—6. Salek's. steadiness was too much for' Falconer, who only took two games in the set. Lawson was playing at his best against Henderson, winning his match 9 —5. Mrs. .Pieiard played a very safe gamo against Miss .'Smythe... The Karo'ri lady -was rather troubled bjr her opponent's short service, which she frequently put-into tho-net or hit- out: Mrs. Reeves had' an easy win .from Miss Gavin, . M'Nicol .and Ward had a hard fight with Smythe and Henderson, just winning • 9—7. Salek and M'Lcan gave Downes and Falconer a close run, only losing 7 —9. Misses Smythe and Gavin played "a very good double,., and ;.defeated their older: opponents, somewhat oasily. Missos Williams and Lo Seur wero beaten. by Misses Carley, and Bennett 7—6. Karriri was unfortunate in losing two games by default, and being without the services of Miss. Thompson. ' '■ Victoria College camo to light, with a win, eight sets to five, against Petone. Cornell was too strong for Tudhope, hut. the latter put up a very good fight. Petone lost two matches by default. . , ■ the pennant contest, Johnsonville easily won. from Victoria,Collegfc, seven'sets to nil. Robertson and Thompson did not meet with much opposition in their singles. Scott gavo Moore-a very close go, and with very little' luck might have scored a . victory. Miss Wilson played a : nice single against Miss Barkas, ; and with' Mrs. Moore defeated rMisses Barkas and M'lntosh. Brougham Hill ' B v. Victoria College B resulted in a. wiii for the former byseven •sets to-nil. The most closely-contested match was between Williams and Smith v. Duncan and-Tudhope;-the latter pair were' only' defeated. 9—7 5 .. Racquets.—Kilbirnie gave Brougham Hill A a good run, and, although being beaten five sots to two,\ the winning team only snored six mora games than Kilbirnie. O'Leary and Hutellings had a close game, which lasted about ah'hour and a half, tho former player only taking tho match 9—B. Veen promises to be a good player, as, also docs Dart. Miss Price has improved very much of late, and her ' win against- / Miss Saxon .wps most creditable. Hntchings and Crosslwrry will make a good double -if' tliey practise together.
