WAIRARAPA NOTES.
Mr. J. H. Smythe, of .Northern Wairoa, Hawkc's. Bay, aud 0110 of the. oldest pioneer settlers in New Zealand; informs onr .Wairarapa correspondent that tho present summer is'tho driest he hps experienced here since 1887. Mr. Smythe states that water is so scarce in his district that some of the farm-ers-have been, forced to dig. wells to obtain supplies for their shcop and cattle. In many of the gardens of the ' Island Capo w'eed" is dying, owing to the. severity of the drought. While 3omo predict an increase, others believe that lambs will come down considerably in'price before long. Mr. A. Falconer, of Kaiparoro, Wairarapa. remembers buying theiti at '2s, (id, a down in Masterton sale "ards about sixteen years ago. ■ •
