MAKARA RIDING

Messrs. F. T. Moore, H. J. Jillett, P. Bryant, and H. Eastwood met the ratepayers of the Porirua Riding in the newly-formed Makara County at Mrs. Anty's Hall, Porirua, last night. Mr. Moore stated the capital value of the Porirua Riding was roundly £570,000, and that a rate of 3/4d. in the £ would provide £1781 s.; Government subsidy on same, £445 ; hotel, slaughtering, and other fees and licenses, £175 ; making a total revenue of £2401 5s. He estimated the expenditure as follows :— Cost of administration, £240; hospital and charitable aid, £400 ; wages of eight road maintenance men, £1000 ; road and bridge material, cartage, and extra labour, £761 5s. ; total, £2401 5s. Mr. Moore also stated that, as Miramar and Jolnisonviile had obtained approximately twothirds of the rate levied by the Hutt County Council at the time of their respective severances, Porirua is entitled to two-thirds of the rate levied last year by the Hutt County Council, which would amount to £1583 6s. 8d., a sum ample for requirements until the ensuing year's rate can be struck ; and that, as Porirua and Makara have largely contributed to the cost of purchasing the Hutt County offices on Lambton quay, the new Makara County should be granted the perpetual rights to exclusively use one room for an office in these buildings, and the occasional use of the Board room for meetings of the Makara County Council.
