During a thick fog tho Great Eastern Railway Company's steamer Amsterdam collided' off tho Hook of Holland with the. British' stoamer Axminster. Tho Amsterdam's passengers took to tho boats. All tho boats aro safo except' ono, which is missing.- It contains twenty-four of the passengers and crow. • ASHORE. ' STEAMER THODE FAGELUND, IN A BAD POSITION. ; (Rec. Jan. 23, 6.10 p.m.) Sydney, January, 23, Tho Norwegian steamer Thodo Fagejund, bound from Adelaide to Sydney in ballast, is ashore at Cronulla beach. She lies hard and fast on the rocks,'in a bad position. Tho crow aro safe. A tug is standing by the Thodo Fagclund. ! ! CREW. RETURN TO BOAT. EFFORTS TO TOW HER OFF. " (Reo. Jau. 23, 10.55 p.m.) Sydney, January 23. Tho Thodo Fagelund was coining to Sydney to dock, after discharging timber at Adelaide. Sho ran ashore during tho night. Captain Agerup states that tho sea was rough, ,wit)i a thick hazo and drizzling rain. At the time of tho disaster it was impossiblo to seo anything beyond a length from the. ship.
From tho lights ashore, ho was under tho impression that ho was off Coogeo beach.. Suddenly, whilo the steamer was going at full speed ahead, sho crashed on to the rooks. Signals of distress were made, but wero unseen, apparently owing to thick weather. Tugs camo to the- assistaueo of tho steamer during the morning. Afj-er tho vcsspl struck bow first, her stcri) swung ronnd on to tho rocks, and her hoad -now points seaward. She lies insido the reef, on a rocky bottom, with boulders all round. . The propeller and the rudder havo been damaged, and tho falso bottom has been torn. Tho Fagolund is making'a littlo water in No. 1 hold. . .' The crow, who are Norwegians, after land-, ing, returned aboard, wliero they remain, Tho prospects of salvage aro not considered very hopeful. The sei\ calmed during the day,-and is now ■smooth,' with a light wind. If bad .weathor comes,' it is feared that the steamer, owing to tho exposed position, will go to pieqos. Several attempts to tow her off during tho day failed. Another will be mado at high wntor to-night.
