WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FRUIT.
Two years ago there were only 40 or 50, cases of Western Australian fruit placed ,in cool storage; last year there were between 14,000 and 15,000 eases. Fruit put in on March 26, worth Bs. a case, was taken out on October '26—seven ' months later —and Sold- ; for from- 20s. to 225. per case. The !■ cost • of storage jwas- 4s. 10d., and the net gain; to tho grower .through storing was 8s; or9s. He doubled his income. A. trial shipment, of apples to Colombo fetched Bs.' 6d. a case. A shipment of choice oranges was reported'to bo too good; for tho Colombo trade. Western Australia expects to export 0000 or: 6000 casos of fruit this season,, and to increase that.number hereafter bv 20,000 each yeaj*. Western Australia is in danger of >■ getting ahead of Now Zealand. The cool-storage fruit freight under tho new mail contract is ■ reduced "from 7os. to 60s. per ton of 23 bushel eases.
