The Union Company's steamer Warrimoo, which left Sydney on Saturday, tor Wellington direct, arrived in the Stream about half-past nine last night. Tho vessel will bp_ cleared by the Health and Customs Officers this morning, and berthed at the Queen's Wharf. THE STAR OF SCOTLAND. Advice has been received thnt the Tyser Line steamer Star of Scotland sailed from London on Friday, for New Zealand, via Melbourne and Sydney. The vessel calls at Auckland and Napier before coming to Wellington, where she is due about April 2. THE TASMAN. . The Nelson and Motueka trader Tasman was, telegraphed to sail from Motneka on Monday night, out no further word has been posted at telegraph office, about her not having sailed. Enquiries yesterday elicited the fact that at. the time she was "to sail" from 'Motueka the vessel was on the Slip in Nelson. As .no word "of her departure frbni 'Nelson has yet come' through, she will probably arrive here in Friday or Saturday. . ~ . /- SCARCITY OF SAILORS. Shipmasters throughout the Dominion have on various occasions, had their, vessels considerably delayed through their inability to secure a full complement of sailors. According to the "Commercial News," there is a great scarcity of seamen in Sydney just now, and an epidemic of - desertion has again set in. Tho captain of a sailing vessel which has been loaded and ready for .sea nearly a week states that during his stay in Port Jackson no less than seven of the crew deserted, u'-d cannot bo, found, consequently he has "had. to sot about to obtain the full complement of men. Last Thursday he managed to secu v three seamen, but'whilo on the'way to be signed on.they were informed that there were prospects of a temporary position oil flic wharves at Darling Harbour. -The men-did not 'trouble' any further about' signing on; but immediately hied to Sussex" Street, and managed to obtain the work on the wharves, with the result that tho captain had to, begin his search over again... Seveial other shipmasters are in the same predicamen;, as they also are'unablo to find men to complete the full nnmbor. required by the regulations. The difficulty-is said to be caused by the 'opportunities now open for obtaining employment on the wharves through the wharf labourers, strike, and the,, consequent action of, the. steamship companies in engaging "free" labourers to discharge and load their vessels. '

Tho steamer Jane Douglas loft Hokitika yesterday morning for Wellington, and is due hero to-day. The Union Company's cargo steamer Kamono left Westport yesterday coal-laden for. Wellington, and is due liere to-day;' The -Westport' Coal : Company's steamer Canopu's -is expected here from Westport with, a cargo ,of coal for the' warships. '■ : The Union Company's cargo'' steamer Iyair .tunn has deft Lvttelton, for .-.'Westport,-to load a.caifgo of coal for the squadron at Wellington. ' The Union Company's steamer Koonya. which has been engaged in towing.the Ninirod. to tho ice, returned' to' Port Chalmers yesterday. • ■ ' ■ , ' The Government steamer Hinempa arrived as Onohunga. 'yesterday afternobh' from the Northern lighthouses. She is eipected back in Wellington early next week. According to ail exchange, the Shaw, Savill steamer Kuinara' will load for London at Auckland on February 15; and is expected to finally sail on February .20, ■ from the'same port, for London. . . . ' • The steamer Manukau, of the Union Company's fleet, whicli arrived at 'Auckland from Sydney on Monday, brought 360 passenger-i for all ports, and-400 tons of cargo for'discharge at Auckland. '.!
