■ A : BIG .SETTLEMENT; \ BTJT BRIDEGROOM TO USE ONLY THE . INCOME. BT TKIEOBAI'K—-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTItIOHT. New Yorhi January 21, The marriago settlement of Miss Gladys Vanderbilt makes her 'intendedj Count Laszlo Szeclienyi, a gift o{ a'million sterling. Tho raonoy, however, will be hold in trust, the Count to have tho use of tho income therefrom.
/ HEIRESS TO £6,000,000. Miss Gladys Vandorbilt is understood to be heiress to .£6,000,000. Count Laszlc Szeohenyi is a member of a .well-known Hungarianfamily; and is a devout Roman Catholic.' The Vanderbilts belong to- the Protestant Episcopal Churth. ' It is stated that, in the first place, tho threo brothers of the bride-to-be strenuously opposed their sister's marriago with a foreigner; and that, no sooner had theso objections been overcome, than further obstacles appeared in the way of religious formalities. The trouble, it appeared, was as to whether tho Roman Catholic or tho Protestant marriage ceremony should take precedence. It has not been made clear how the issue was decided. t ' A Bill has been introduced in tho United States House of Representatives providing for the'imposition of a 25 per cent, tax on dowries and settlements in connection with the marriages of American citizens and foreigners. It is alleged that 180 millions sterling have left tho "land of dopleted currency since American girls took to marrying foreign noblemen; and that many of tho titled persQnages presenting themselves have proved to l)e frauds. At present the sister of Mr. Harry Thaw is fining the Earl of Yarmouth for nullity of marriage. A 25 per cent, tax on Count Szenhenyi'a million would cause quite a flutter even in the United States treasury.
