AN AUCKLAND WIIARF SENSATION. Auckland, January 20. A gas explosion occurred ,-ou the Quay Street jetty this morning, which dislodged part of the foundations of a small craiio at the ontriwce to tho irbarf.. An employee of tho Gas Company went underneath tho wharf with a • lighted match for llin purpose of examining tho pipes, but.luckily was some distance away from what was tho contro of the explosion, and sustained no injury. There was a leak in one of the pipes, and sufficient gas had escaped to inako an explosive mixture under the wharf. The explosion was accompanied by a loud report. Tho fire which followed was extinguished by tho wharf section of tho city firo brigade before it had dono much damage to tho wharf. A painful accident occurred at Cable's Foundry yesterday. Whilst engaged in shifting cast-iron rollers on a trolley an elderly man named James Durrant, who resides at ICilbirnio, sustained a compound fracture of tin leg through a roller falling upon it.
