TENURE OF SMALL GRAZING RUNS.

6 DEFERRED PROFITS. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUSH AND GRASS. , (BT TELEGRAM—rEUSS ASSOCIATION.) Cisborne, January. 19., Tlio Hon. Mr. M'Nab, Minister for Lands, 011 Saturday morning received a deputation regarding tile position of small grazing runs. It was stated that small grazing runs <in Poverty Bay had been' taken up in a very rough state, and could not return a profit for at least ten years. The runs had been taken up 011.the understanding that they would not ho re-occupied by tho Government till they wero wanted for some.public purpose, and tho lessees had paid a bingoodwill. The Minister said that when small grazing run leases fell , in, the Land Board reported on them, and, if it was not possible to settle tho land any closer, the leases were renewed. It was tho intention of the framer of tho Act (tho late Sir John M'Kenzie) that small grazing runs should only be temporarily occupied. There was no doubt that small grazing \ runs in different localities needed different treatment, and grass land should bo treated differently to bush land. It was probable that the framer of .tho Act thought more of land in his own district, and did not think that small grazing runs would be taken up so much in the North Island.
