In reply to a memorial from exporters and flour merchants, asking for a shipping subsidy .to assist in the' development' l , of trade with the East, tho Premier stated that no subsidy v could bo granted to the Burns, Philp and Company's lino, because it was no part of, the function of the Government to protect : shipping companies against competition.
