ROAD METAL FOR TARANAKI.
£. Galvin, of the Miues. Department; who lias been -rating Taranaki. states that noar Waipuku, which.is the highest point of ® railway lino, between Wellington ■ and New Plymouth, the Government -has installed, a yery larae stone Acrusher. to pre-* pare supplies of l'oad met'al, which is a very scarce commodity in most parts of that province. The crusher is' driven by two Pel ton water-wheels, and, has a revolving screen which'sizes the metal as it comes out. The crusher takes huge : lumps of stone, 27 inches in diameter, and breaks them iu its' immense jaws. The motor'power for the wheels-; is-, obtained froih tho Waipuku river. The plant-is hot'yet in full operation, but (f- sufficient' metal can be' got. there at a reasonable - rato-r-and it; is hoped to get it. it a cost of 4s; Gd. a yard ; or. about half tlio'' price for which it is obtained in Wellington' ~the' Government- will bo able, after -'supplyng its - own needs for' ballasting -its railway,': :p. soil stonia- to iocaj bodies for purposes of road formiU-ion. --' There appears ' to bo liny juantity! of . mot'al at the 'place, and' th'o lower supply is very strong, so that 1 if pre-' ;ent, promises are realised 'other' crushers vill probably bo installed.
