Ellery,formerly Government. Astroliqmer ; ; aetat 81. Lieut.-Col. B. L. J. Ellery, C.M.G., F.R.S., was born in ' Surrey in l»ii7, and caino to Melbourne in 1851. In 1553 lie accepted on appointed to establish an Observatory near Melbourne, and he continued as Director of .the Observatory v (wliicli was afterwards moved to Melbourne)' until 1895, when he,-' retired from - tne public, service of the colony. In 1873 lie organised, arid subsequently coniniande'd, tlio Victorian Torpedo Corps (now the Submarine Mining Engineers), from which he. retired with the rank of Lieutl-Colonel in 18S9.
