GREAT BRITAIN'S DECREASING BIRTH-RATE.
Two items of international. interest: that the newspaper reader frequently moots with are that cases of cancer and mortality from it are increasing, and that the birth-rate is falling all over the world. Among the facts bearing on the latter subject is the recent publication of the report for 1905 of the ..Registrar-Gencral of births, marriages, and deaths in England and Walei The births registered in 1905 numbered 929,293 ' and were in the proportion of 27.2 per 1000 of the total population of both sexes and all ages, and the lowest rate recorded since civil registration was established. In the: year 1876 the birth-rate in England and' Wales attained the highest point on per 1000 living. Siuco that .date: the rate has! fallen steadily, the rate' of .1905 . being 0.7 per 1000 below that recorded for 1904. The death rate is also decreasing, the number of persons dying in 1905 numbering only 520,031, a proportion of 15.2 per 10U0, which is the lowest rate, recorded since civil registration was established.
