THE PREMIER.
RETURNS FROM -THE SOUTH.
At an early hour yesterday morning tho Tutanokai pointed her white nose ton-wards from the I'icton Sounds, and before tho church lj'ells were ringing had reached her berth at tho Glasgow Wharf, with the Premier and Lady Ward on board. Sir Josoph Ward has returned from his trip to the south feeling considerably tho better lor tho brief relaxation. To a Dominion representative last evening lie 1 said a good deal of the pnst ten days had been sppnt in the delightful bays of Stewart Island— in Half Moon Bay, Port Adventure, and similar places. Towards the end of the week
tlio party left tho south and steamed up to the Marlborough Sounds, where the rugged scenery was also much enjoyed. One of the ; objects of the Premier's visit here was to make some observations in regard to a cable line, connecting Port Underwood by cable and telegraph lino across the Sounds and the Oroixplles. He also wanted to eoc the possibilities of cable communication with Stephens Island from Elmslie -Bay, and across D'Urvillo Island. This was an important work that should be taken in hand, because ships passing through the Strait could then be signalled, from Stephens Island in almost any weather. Wellington would then have positive information regarding ships oithor approaching or leaving. The Premier did no fishing while in the Sounds. He considered this resort might be more greatly availed of by tourists and especially by AVcilingtonians desiring a brief: holiday. Tho Premier said he had been communicated with regarding the destruction of bush in the Marlborough Sounds, and intended to have it stopped. Tie looked ujfoii the destruction of scenery in such places as a national loss. To-day he would issue tho necessary instructions to prevent it. Sir ,Josei>h Ward leaves here on Wcdnes-
day night in tlio Maori for the south. Ho has oliicial business to transact in Christuliurch and Duncdin, and possibly in Southland. 110 will afterwards go north.
