NEW: ZEALAND CROWN MINES. :'•
•The report of the New Zealand Crown Mines ■ Company, Limited, for the year ended August 3i last, submitted at the meeting in London on December 1, states that after writing oil dB3BOO for depreciation of machinery, plant and buildings (being the usual 10 per cent.), and J!13;77} (being .the whole expenditure on mine development for the year), a net profit is shown of' -,£3250. This, being added to the credit balance brought forward, amounting to >62238, leaves, a surplus of ,£5194 to bo carried forward. Tho policy of development recommended by Mr. Daw. at tho last annual meeting was pursued for somo' months, and the v.'inze in the No. 5 level was continued to a • depth of over 234 ft. At this point a stream of water was struck at the end of January, which has almost entirely stopped operations ' below the No. 5- level. A rich chute of ore has • been found on the No. 5 level, but . there is difficulty in opening it up on accoiint • of, the water which has been met with. The njw reef in tho upper part of tho mine is yielding ore of payable value, but it has not .yet been explored bolow the Waitawlieta Tunnel level. As a great deal moro water has been encountered than was anticipated at tho time of tho last annual general meeting, a considerable addition to the pumping plant is now urgontly. required. In view of the limi- . ted financial resources of the Company, the peculiar physical difficulties presented by the property, and the impossibility of exchanging views fully by letter, it has been deemed advisable to request MK Daw to visit London ngain, in order to consult with the directors, and with engineers of cminonco on this important question. As soon as the directors are. satisfied that a suitable plant can be installed at a coat not excccdiua. iha _cash re-
