NOTES ON THE PLAY. . .- • (BT ■ TELEQEArn—SI'ECUI . COEEESFOKDIHI.) ,' ■ .Auckland,. January 9.... --'When tho result of tlio eleventh round'was decided,|it was seen that'Hastings,'Gisborne, and Carlton had won in tlieir. respective sections, 'and tho championship' would .consequently lie botwijen these three.' All had played ton ; games, Gisborne and Carlton having come through without a defeat, while Hastings Had met' with tho o'no reverse. It was ~decided that Carlton (Auckland) ' arid Gisboriio should play .off ■ first. When- the match .started, there y.-as a largo attendance, all the bowlers having assembled on tho Auckland Club's green, where the contest took place, and all watched tho progress of tho games • with tho keenest interest, notwithstanding that it,, extended over three hours on rink 5. ,
Tho teams wore: —Gisborne —Pettie, Robertson,: Coleman, Crawford'(s.); Carlton — Ronayne,Holmes,'.--Wrathall, Wilson (s.). 'Carlton made a fine start, scoring four and then two while Gisborne, stood still. .Gisborne then netted two ones': in succession, prevontirig, Carlton from increasing their score; but.with tho. next three.heads Carlton mado a great jump in their total from..6 to 14, with a ono, three, and four, while Gisborne again could not displace them. Carlton's scoro did not increase for the next six heads, but Gisborne by six consecutive singles drew up to eight, and then stood still again, whilo Carlton, with a.two, one, and a five, tho latter by alNround brilliant placing,- increased their total to 22, which was their top'scoro in this rink, for they did not get in position again. Gisborne, on the other hand,'had continued slowly to creep up from bight at tho sixteenth head, to 19 on the twenty-first by a two; one, four, and a brace of two, and tho finishing shots were very exciting, especially as Gisborne had the. best of the scoring. Tho final score was—Carlton, 22; Gisborne, 19. On the sixth rink the play was of a more close and exciting nature all; through. The players were—Carlton: Curtis, Laurie, Jiagleton, Kilgour (s.); Gisborne: Euro, Harris, Hennessv, Martin • (s.). •In ■ this Carlton again mado the _ initial scoro, a brace, which was responded to equally well. Then the home team did beautifully, scoring five heads to tlioir opponents' nil, and two heads later three was scored, bringing up tho total, to ten, while Gisborne were only three. A couple of singles to Gisborne,. then two to Carlton, followed. by another couple of singled. A "brace, a quartette, and a brace in"succession to Gisborne, while Carlton stood still, gave the visitors.a lead-of three, 15 to 12. Then the home , team rallied with-.a'four, but Gisbdrho was equal to it, and responded with a two and three. Gisborne had then a lead of four on the sixteenth head, and the excitement was . intense.' From this, however, Carlton tbok 'charge,' and. by splendid play scored two braces and then threo singles, whiles Gisborne's . total -did not. move.' Die scoring' shows how close tho game was all through. Carlton finished with 23, and Gisborne 20. 'In the aggregate. Carlton won by 45, to .39, h'avinjg. an advantage of three on each rink. Carlton were'loudly applauded, and cheers were given for each team. Carlton will play Hastings to-morrow. . The pairs championship' rested between the, representatives of two Auckland clubs, Ponsonby and Mount Eden. Smith and Parsons ; represented ,tho former, and , Simpson arid-Tutt the fetter. The Mountain pair ■ started the score with two singles, and then. a.five to. Ponsonby's three; The .Mount Eden • representatives could not increase their score.up to tho sixteenth hqad. but the Ponsonby'players, by" singles and a couple of braces, ■ interspersed with a fine five at ,the twelfth headj ran their score up.to 23. Simpson and Tutt then' got in three . and a 'single, and on the last two heads a single ana a four., Smith and. Parsons only , scored once on the list five heads, , but that once yielded.six,, making'their-total 29 to Simpson . and Tutt's If). - . , <
As it- happened, the singles championship was : fought out between two. did. Wangauui residents, James Patterson, of the Wanganui Clubhand J. Bfinnie, who now resides in, Auckland, and. played as a .member of the Auckland Club. Scoring was slow, but Patterson did the bettor placing, and at the ninth head had run up. IS, while Binnie had only scored one, secured on tho third head. _ At the tenth head Bennie scored another single, but Patterson replied, with three braces in succession. Then Bonnie got, two'pairs, making the scores on the sixteenth. head, Patterson 21, and Bennio 0. The Wanganui representative increased his advantage, with a two, one, and three, to 25, to which Bonnie re; plied with a two and three, tho latter on tho 21sfc head. Patterson thus won by 25 to 11. Bennio did not reproduce the fine form he showed in the initial stages of tho tournament. A points prize will be awarded the club having tho least number of points scored against it.
