A CLUB FOR COUNTRY-LOVING. GIRLS.
In the "Girl's Realm" appears an illustrated paper on "A Novel Club for Countryloving Girls," by' Josephine. liullen. The writer begins by observing : that, although girls taking up. agricultural pursuits have healthful lives, they are apt to get out of •touch with-intellectual"life.-
Though on- a small scale, an effort ha 3 now been ;mn(le to .solve this :diffic\ilty by Miss Woodhull, daughter of a' well-known American lady. A house, described as a beautiful old Elizabethan manory.-vith .1585 carved on its stone gateway, has.been.taken in '- the heart df 'the - country, .noar-.Tcwkes-bury,' which is to be a iilub for girls interested in ' agricultural work, ':and 'also in all kinds of intellectual work. Town-dwellers may arrange 'to go. there!for a 'holiday, •• or giris wishing' to-take some branch ,of .'agriculture. may study, there for a longer or-shorter period. -There' are at . preSont sixteen bedrooms, - but ( there will I 'be almost three times as ina'ny.' Lady l 'servants aro employed, '.and, uridkr wise supervision', fdund much abettor thaii the ordinary domestic. There is a library and also -a'.music-room, in Tyhich..concerts and dramatic performances: are got up, and:entertaininents.given to.the village-folk. The Club'being, near to Cheltenham it might be used as :a residence, and lcctiires" taken at Cheltenham '.College.: Tliere is evcn'a;garage at the C(ub, .'and the surrounding country seems very attractive. Moil are admitted as guest's. ■ ■ •There is already. ;a handful' of .resident members, each of whom.has.her own way of adding to her little income. Some grow fruit, flowers, or vegetables; another keeps poultry, another bees; whilst one devotes herself to the breeding.'of fancy, dogs. * • A gardening', school,.-, whose. fees are particularly . moderate, is carried on in connection with the Club, Some members; of; which seem to live in the village (Bredonis Norton),, renting .cottages'''and .taking meals. at the Club. ,One or two of theso outside members,, as it . were,:: take ..up tomato-growing. No doubt • such a venture,, if not - killed :by restrictions', really would make, life for a girl with a small income of. £50 or so, and no;particular'.training,' and .help 'her, to. livo instead: of.'merely existing.
