LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

' AMERICA AND JAPAN. Sir,—l do not care to descend to the level of vulgarity by accusing a mail of untruthfulness, but I think I am justified in do-' raanding of "Constant Reader" proofs-of his assertions ro America and Japan. As "Constant Reader" has. not touched on any of the most important points of my letter, I do not feel called upon for a further discussion of the subject. I would, howovor, remind him that courtesy does not detract from the'best stylo of composition.—l am, etc., INTEGRO. Wellington, January 6, 1908. WINE AND THE SACRAMENT. ' Sir,—Referring* to the story .published in your columns of the defiance of the Bishop of Manchester by the Rev. Geo. Denycr, vicar of.Blackburn, I should like to bo. per-, miited t-o ask on what reasonable grounds the bishop referred to, and most of his colleagues demand that alcoholic wine shall be used at'tho sacrament of the Lord's Supper. Ignoring- altogether .the question . whether Christ over partook of intoxicating wine, it is surely, beyond all doubt that the wine used at the initiation of the Lord's Supper was not intoxicating. The Jewish Rabbi of this city would tell anyone who asked him that'raisins are boiled to provide the unfermented drink that is used here at the Passover season, and it is obvious tbat Jesus Christ strictly observed the Passover customs when initiating what is noW i known as the Lord's Supper. I am not seeking controversy on this question, and . shall not ask space for any further correspondence, but I am sincorely desirous to know what can possibly beVsaid in justification of the attitude' taken by tho Bishop of Manchester. —I am, etc., ' . CHAS. PORTER,-Methodist-Parsonage, Thorndon. Wellington, January 6.
