MINING NEWS.
(BY TELEGRAM—PRESS ASSOCIATION.). Thames, Jiuiuary 7. A work of more than district importanco, and ono that will have a marked' effect' oil the raining industry of • the Thames, has been commenced, viz., the sinking 'of the largo Thames Hauraki shaft, to' which is connected the mammoth pumping plant, purchased ,by the Government, and'handed to the Drainage Board to control. All' mines in the drainage area are contributing to tho upkeep of tllo shaft, vrhich is now down eight hundred feet. It is proposed to sink to a thousand feet. Tho adjoining mine, tho May Queen, is now openihg out at eight hundred feet, but it is doubtful if tho Minister for Mines will consent to other mines working from the shaft until it has been sunk an additional two hundred feet. A crosscut from tho shaft in a northerly direction would render available a largo area of virgin ground to many mines. In sonifl cases gold has carried down to the • whter level, which will be lowered four hundred feet, when tho connection is made. If the work proveG successful, the futuro of tho Thames is assured. No discussion has yet been mado public as to tho appointment of an Inspector of Mines, in succession to Mr. Coutts. - Soundings taken at the entrance of the Thames Iliyer to the Hauraki Gulf show so far no silting from tailings. The damage is copfined to areas further up stream
