The mail was picked up in a dying 'condition, and carried to the rear of Maddisoivs private residence, where, he; was attended medically, but vn spito of- every attention the unfortunate man expired in about 20 minutes. Decoased was a married man with no family, and was about 45 years of ago. DEATH FROM STRYCHNINE POISONING. (DY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.). 1 Auckland, January 7. .A man. named- Henry Thomas Lowes Griffin, of formerly of Duncdin, was taken seriously ill a.t a boarding-houso last evening. Tho doctor treated tho patient for strychnine.-poisoning, .of which ho showed symptoms. Henry Griffin,., who died from strychnine poisoning at Whangarei, was for many years on the reporting staff of the " Otago Daily Times,"' and rose to be senior. 110 then purchased tho Mosgiel paper, tho "Taiori Advocate," from Mr. \V. Carncross, and conducted that. journal for two or . three years, whon ho sold out, and after a while proceeded north to become part-proprietor of tho "Whangaroi Free Press." " Auckland, January 7. ; The body of a man about. 25 years of ago, 5 foot 8 inches in hoight, of slight build, and fair complexion - was found dead oil tho beach at St. Helier's Bay with cyanide potassium beside hjm. Letters wore found in his pocket addressed to " Joo," and reference is mado theroin to a Dunedin young lady staying in Auckland. The body was afterwards identified as that of Joseph Breeze, who was employed last month by Mr. Renclell, draper, as a porter, and, as far as is .known, was unmarried.
A man named John Morgan, third cook at tho Hotel Cecil, met with an' accident whilst getting off a tramcar yesterday ovening. It appeal's that. Morgan was standing talking to some friends at the corner of Ciiarlotto Stroet and waiting for an Island Bay car. Tho car passed tho spot where tho mon were standing, travelling at a slow pace. The whole party intended boarding tho tram, but Morgan was tho only one who got on board. Soeinjj that his comradcs were not following him, lie-attempted to jump off, and in doing so, according to an eye-witness, landed heavily on bis head on the road. The injured man was taken to tho Lambton Quay Police Station, where ho was attended to by Dr. Gilmer, who ordered his immediate removal to tho Hospital, whore ho was taken in an unconscious condition. On an examination being mado at tho hospital it was found that the man was suffering from a slight concussion of tho brain. Morgan is a single man, and a recent arrival from England.
Last night a man named Cousins was admitted to tho Hospital suffering from n badly-crushed hand, the result of injuries received while ■ working at Messrs. Luke's foundry.
