RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION.

Mr. E. W. Holmes, Engineer-in-Chief of tlio Public Works Dopartmorit, has just made an inspection of tho ivories in progress in conncction with tho Egmont branch railway and tho lino which is to run between tho Taranaki-Wanganui system and tho North Island Main Trunk Railway. Tho Egmont lino, about six miles long, and constructed to tap supplies of metal, will bo completed in about a month. On tho Strat-ford-Ongarue lino satisfactory progress has boon made. Tho first section (Stratford to Douglas), 11 miles in length, has beon opon for some time, and in two or three weeks the oxtonsion to Huiroa (five miles) will also be availably for passonger traffic, leaving about 90 milos of lino to construct before conncction is mad 9 with the Main Trunk railway. A third section will be commenced immediately.
