OTAKI.
Tho Rev. 11. T. Stealey,',of Otaki,'has, leftto attend a meeting ; at-Napier to-day, when lie will endeavour to got land for the erection" of a Maori Collogo, which has not properly been' mado over to the trustees. ' Messrs. J. W. Wilson and T. Bathgate', both formerly of Otaki, have been appointed' dairy, inspectors. l Tho prizes, won by the. scholars attending tho Manakau school have been presented by Mr.,M'Bain...
During the last-week fish have been-very plentiful on the Otaki 'beach, and nightly, dozens of fishonne!i,_iu boats and otherwise, havo been making enormous, hauls. Kawhia especially are very- plentiful; and woro so numorous on 1 one occasion-that Soveral' per-; sons rushed in the water a fow yards' an'd slayed dozens by sticks. , Mr. Byron Brown is cutting up somo valuable .-'land ', adjoining,fthe township. 'This should give tjie town a decided lift, and his action is to bo commended. It is well known that it; is the holdings-near the town ,that keep tiro placo at a standstill.
The country at tho'present timo, especially compared with; other districts,. is. looking splendid, and' complaints aro few and far between. -Grass is plentiful,, and otherwise things are flourishing. -, ' . ' The postal" arrangements in this district might oasily bo improved. As the contract now stands wo got an up-mail at 10.10 a.m., and one at 7.10 p.m.-. In. the meantime no mails arrivo, not oven by the 1.15' p.m. uptrain, 2.10 p.m. tj-ain down, or the 5 p.m. train. A down mail 'arrives late'at night, so it is easily seen our service is ' totally inadequate. ' Not-only do Otaki residents complain, but Ohau, Manakau, To' Horo, and Waikanae all.; havo complaints, and rightly so;
