Invercargill, January 4. • William Hazlett, aged 34, a farmer'residing at South, 'Hillend, was killed. on Friday afternoon by a fall of earth, a pi?k penetrating his- abdomen. A NARROW ESCAPE. . Reofton, January 4. Mrs, Alfred Smith was drowned yesterday while bathing at lnangahua Junction. Great sympathy is. expressed for the relatives of tho deceased, who was well-known for kindness and charitable works. CHILD ACCIDENTALLY 'BURNED. (iIT TZLEG BAJ'H—3I'EOI AL CORRESPONDENT.! Palmerston North, January 5. Shortly before three o'clock on Saturday a three-year-old girl, named Doris May ICirkpatriclc, met her death at Gibson's boardinghouse through lier clothes catching fire. Dr. Putnam was called in, hut the case was hopoiess, and tho child expired within an hour after receiving the injuries. Nurse Henderson, who was passing at the time, also rendered first aid. ' An inquest ps held this afternoon before Captain Mowlam (coroner), and it was shown that. everything possible was done for tho ■ child. It is surmised that the child' was pi dying with matches in a room where she had beon put to sleep. The coroner remarked that it appeared that there was a want of care on the part of soveral parents in leaving nmtclies at the disposal of children. The verdict was that the child met her death by being accidentally burned.
