Sir, —Regarding tho so-called flightless duck of the' Auckland' Islands. In confirmation of my statement that I had scon'this bird Uy, 1 now ask you to publish tho following letter, from Mr, A. -W. Betlnino, who was lor many years on board the steamer Hinomoa as second and first engineer, who js an accurate observer, greatly interested in bird life, and had ample opportunities of ob r serving the bird:— _ _ Stewart's Island, December li, 1907 ; - Memorandum to Henry Travers', Welling ton, regarding Auckland duok. Dear Sir, —You are quito correct regardin" tho littlo duck on tho Auckland Islands : be?ng able to fly. I havo seen thorn Hying on several occasions, but tlioy do not seom to bo able to sustain themselves on the wing' for aiiy length of time, only just risingdear of tho wator, and flying from point to point-.' ; ' A.
