It also dovastatod Mr.'' M'Kee's orchard, which is several acres in extent, destroyed some bush on the property of Mr. F. Earle and othors, and advanced to. the Government H-osorvc. Preventive .measures havo beon .talsen, niid it is belioved that tho fire is now practically ovor, but the incident shows the need for care on the part .of those who go out with a "billy" to'spend an open-air .holiday.

Tho Ranfurly bohrdinghouse at Foxton, a twelve-roomed building, was destroyed by lire to-day. It- was insured for £400 and tho furniture-'for £200. The proprietress, Mrs. Smith, had-lockod the place and loft it only a few- minutes before ■ the firo occurred. / .

A six-roomed dwelling in Hyderabad Road, ownod by Williams and Kettlo, and occupied by Georgo Lovegrovc, was gutted by fire this morning. Children sleeping upstairs wore rescued with some difficulty. The furniture was insured for £100 in-the Northern Office, and the building was also covered, but the amount is not availablo.

FIRE AT INVERCARGILL. ' i . Invercargill, January 2. About eleven o'clock last night a fire occurred in a block of buildings in Deo Streot, occupied by Mr. Ncill (herbalist), Phillips (photographer), and Bacon (umbrella maker).It started, in Mr. Phillips'?, and though tho brigade quickly got it under, the studio was gutted. Mr. Phillips's stock was insured for £250, but ho estimates loss at £110 above this. Mr. Bacon's stock was damaged by wator. Mr. Neill's promises escaped almost scathlcss.- Tho building is ono of tho fow woodon ones left in the brick area. The fire is ascribed to ashes from tho firo in Mr. Phillips's living room being blown out of tho grate by the gale which prevailed while Mr. Phillips was out.
