Ignasio do Leonardo and Pietro 'Pampinellia were convicted of kidnapping and employing "Black Hand " methods of extortion. Do Leonardo wns first found guilty, and at once offered'".to turn State's evidence. At tho moment he took the stand, Pampinellia placed his hands on his temples and brought them down slowly until they met at the throat. The effect on de Leonardo was startling. The witness turned deathly pale. Then he managed to say:—"l am sick. I cannot testify." "Why?" demanded Judge O'Sullivan. With an effort do Leonardo replied: " Pampinellia has just given me tho sign of death. It is the 'Black Hand.' I will not testify." He collapsed, and then positively refused to give evidence.
