ASHHURST-POHANCINA MEETINC

< CUP WON BY LOJLUIIA. Tho - annual meeting of tho- AshhurstPohangina Racing Club was held on Saturday iu beautiful weather, and there was a very large attendance of the public. Some of the fields .wero- small,' but for tho Ashhurst Cup there were ten starters, and a good race resulted. The winner turned up in Lomaria, who up till now has been, racing in hack company. The Guineas fell to Prize Bloom, who scored an easy victory over her 'two opponents.- During the day tho sum of £13,011 -was put through the totalisator, as against £15,255 for last year. Twelve bookmakers wero licensed for the day at a 1 feo of £20 'each. In tho Hurdle Race Golden Days ran into the lawn fence, and J. Hercock got badly cut about the head. Ho was later oil removed to the Palmcrston North Hospital. The fact-, that he was lying on tho floor - of the jockeys' room until after 1 o'clock emphasises tho necessity of proper hospital accommodation being provided on all tho courses, and it timo this (juestion was taken up by the clubs. The ordinary, arrangements wero carried out' in good style during tno day, and the races wero started well up to time. The light-weight jockey G. THE CAM3NC ACT,

(BY TELEGRAPH —-PHESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, December 28. The " Star "' publishes the following paragraph " Since the passage of the Gaming Act it has been gonoklly presumed that the measure conhned betting to racccourses, and that any bets made off . the course woro in contravention of the law. This is an erroneous idea, for nowhere does the Act say that betting shall bo limited to tho course. It does provide places where betting may not -be, indulged in—streets, common gaming nouses, and so on —but outside, these places one may bet when ■ and how ho chooses. Thus,, it ■ would., bo perfectly feasible for a bookmaker in Christchurch to make a book oh the present-Auckland Racing Club's meeting so long as. he kept clear of places wherein, according to the-Act,.it is illegal to bet."
