Tho public havo responded willingly to' tho call for. assistance in aid of the Anniversary. regatta, aiid from, present indications tho present season's regatta will be ono oftho biggest yachting events lield in Welling- •• ton.for a'.long jtimo. _ Last Saturday the members of the Port' -' JNicholson Yachting Club and their friends were entertained by Dr. Fell, commodore of the club, and Mrs. Fell, at: their seaside re* sidonco in Mahina Bay. There were'twolvo 'yaehts altogether lying, in the:bay,-.and from the hill.it was quite a picture to look downoix ; the fleet, most of tho yachts having a string. of flags hoisted.. About 99 yachtsmen went over in the different boats, and, it was some ■ fun getting the. crews ashore, each' man 'wanting to got ashore dry. The club chartered' ' tho Duco to take the non-yachtsmen over, and the passengers were to'bo landed in Mahina Bay, but as thero was a bit of a sea' running the steamer went on up: to' Day's Bay, and the* passengers walked, round. During the afterndon a rowing raco took place, one man from each boat having a pull.. Tho • course was out around, tho Pirate and back to tho' steps. - First place fell to the Mahina (Mr. Fell), and second to tho Petrel (Mr. Moore). After a.;pleasant afternoon the yachtsmen gathered together'and gave three,! chcors for Dr. and Mrsi Fell. Oil the beat ' home there wero some great races, especially,/ between tho Janet, Petrel; and Mahaki. -The Janet got home on the ono board, and the' Petrel (second) had to make two boards. The Mahaki arrived home about 30 minutes after tho second boat. The Waitangi left about half an hour after all the other' boats, and was homo before a good many. Tho Malua and Moana had a pretty closo run for first place,, but as tile Malua had, to go down to Martin's Bay, and tho Moana went on to Boat Harbour the, race was "off." 1 Sundav brought a nice full sail breeze from tho soutli-west, and all yachtsmen were out to get a good sun-burning. ' , Tho White Wings made her first trip of the season; and spent the day sailing l outside. The Janet ' and WairOri were also outside; Tho Janet 'won't out past Baring Head, and by tho look — of the crew when tney-came in ono wouldhavo thought they had been in tho sun for six l months. " . \ Tlio Taiparo was under tho Lighthouse fishing, and had the usual luck and a good haul or fish. If there are. fish in the harbour , the "Tai." crew are sure to bo amongst them,. The Citalana and Mahaki wcrefishuig under tlio lee of Ward. Island. The Petrel, with eight aboard hung up, at' Soatoun all day. Soon after sho loft Boat Harbour there was a chocr from deck, and thon a voice said 'big Hedgen' is over- 1 board." Ho was hauled aboard safely. The day was spent • by; somo of tho crew ashore, and; tho rest in, the water. ' At 6 o'clock the anchor was-got aboard, and as tho wind, had dropped tho anchor was again lowered in Worsor Bay, and all hands set out for shore to havo tea. Another start was made for homo at 10 p.m. Tho Nancy Stair did not get out till late, as a now bowsprit had to bo fitted, and sho arrived at Scorching Bay in time for lunch. About 4 o'clock .tho an- - chor was got up and sail-set-for Rona Bay, a favourite, place of the crew. ■ .The second-class , yacht Viking has again been launched after' a r long spell on tho beach noar tlio Patent Slip. This boat had an oil engine fitted ill her, but when purchased by her now owners tlio "phu-phu" was found t<& bo' but of order. ' : . ■ The Now York Yacht Club's refusal to accept Sir Thomas, Linton's challongo is not sportsmanlike, says the "New York World." It is not what; Americans'had a right to cspcct from an organisation of yachtsmen who havo assumed tnisteoship of tho America's Cup. t v "Tho Cup racors havo degenerated, from serviceable boats into fragile raoing machines.
