Dr. Findlay, Minister- for---Menial Affairs, referred to the ..matter, of improving tho journey between Auckland and .Wellington via Taupo. • "I think," ho said, "that wo will soino; day havo to consider tho dosirability of connecting Tokaanir with the Main Trunk' Railway. , rhe distance is not very great, and a road coukl very easily bo made that will finable people from Auckland to go through tho thermal region down to Taupo and lokaanu, and across to tho Main Trunk, and thonce on to Wellington, either direct or by way of the Wanganui River, instead of having to face a long coach-journey, or to go back on their tracks as at present.; The whole distance from Tokaanu, through; llaurimu, would not, bo more than twenty miles, and tho routo would' enablo peoplo to iseo tho wonders of Wairakoi aiid Taupo, whilo 011 their way to Wellington, within a reasonab).o time." ... , * l)r. Findlay spoko enthusiastically of tho beauties of Wairakoi and Taupo, and said that tho combination of the, geyser- and Wairoa Valley, the Hulca Falls, and Aratiatia Rapids was unsurpassed in tho thermal regions.
