' The two ladies, sEartled by the sudden Btoppage, called to the chauffeur, asking iwhat was the matter. There was no answer, and:they.quickly alighted and stepped to the man's side. ; .' I' . v To their amazement' they "found he was dead. ;, His .last act had been to apply ithe 'briike,'and his foot, although lie was dead, still, pressed 'down .the brake, pedal. There , is'littlo doubt that but for this fact a serious disaster wouldr.have occurred..- . . -As it was, the. two ladies' had a very narrow escape-from -injury, l - for-the' car had smashed the fence and was : itself slightly .damaged by the .impact. ; ■ .[ V The two ladies wero terribly-shocked by thoir discovery, ; and quickly summoned assistance. ~ The cliaiiffenr's body was taken from the car. and carried hoine'on an improvised litter.' . . .- ■:
