MAGISTRATE'S COURT

The business ,at the Magistrate's' Court yesterday morning was taken by Messrs'.'H.' A. M'Gregor, W. M'Alpine, and C. P.' Morpeth, J.P. s. The.offonders were mostly convivial souls who had drunk too well in their Christmas Eve celebrations. Tho Bonch me.ted out justice with lenient hands, the heaviest fines being 10s. Patrick Sinott and Karl Peterson woro each convicted and fined 55., in default 24 hours' . imprisonment, and Annie Cain, a previous offender, was convicted and discharged. Richard Searle, found in a state of helpless drunkenness in Jorvois Quay, was convicted aiicl fined 10s., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and was also ordered to pay £1 Is. medical expenses. Four first offenders, who failed to put in an appearance, wero convicted and fined 10s., in dofault 24 hours' imprisonment, and three were convicted and discharged. ; John O'Connor and Terence Smith pleaded 1 guilty to a charge of. behaving in' such a manner in Jervois Quay a3 to occasion • a breach of tho peaco. Station-Sergeant Phair stated that the two accused were found fight-' ing in Jervois Quay-on Tuesday morning.. From information ho had received, it appeared that Smith was the aggressor. Smithwas convicted and fined 205., in default-48 hours' imprisonment, and O'Connor was convicted and fined 10s., with tho alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment. A plea of "Not Guilty" was entered by James Armstrong to a charge of theft on December. 24 of two silver teapots, valued at 30s. On tho application of tho police, a remand was granted until Monday to allow further, inquiries to be made. A young man named John Wm. Morris, alias Kid Kiddell, was brought forward -on a charge of theft on August 13 of a cheque for£6, tho property of James Tiffin, of Timaru. On tho application of Chief-Dotectiyo M'Grath accused was remanded to appear at Timaru on January 3. -y, Robert Rankin, charged with tho theft of tho sum of £22, tho property of John Hennessey, was remanded until January 3, in order to onable witnessos to be brought from tho West Coast. ,
