THE LABOUR SPLIT.

. FURNITURETRADES UNION'S VTTI- ' TUDE. . . KJiU'LY. TO.MR. W. H. WESTBROOKE. Mr. A. E. Adams, a member of the committee of, the Furnituro Trades' Union, and a delegate to the Trades and Labour Council, contradicts certain'statements by Mr. VV.' H. We3tbrooko, Secretary to the Trades and, Labour Council, .with, rcforenco to tlio recent disruption in the Council, .which appeared in tho Dominion on Tuosday last. Referring to tho nomination. of Mr. J. A. jU'Uullough, Mr. Westbrooke had said:—

"The whole, trouble arose from the Furniture Trade Union, and. was because that Union, would not support the recommendation of the. Now Zealand Trades Council Conference regarding . the appointment of Mr. M'Cullough as one of; the Labour representatives on the Arbitration Court." •

"Mr. Westbrooke is quite wrong," said Air. Adams. "I myself nominated . Mr. iyi'Cullough, and the minutes of the Union for October 23 support my statement, and Mr. .Westbrooke, as secretary ,to our Union, ought to know this. Further, tho circular ■which wo received on May 22 with referenco to the nominations contained no mention of Mr. . Voung."'

. Referring to a sta, temetit made by Mr. Westbrboko that there we're piily 172 members in tiie Furniture Trades' Union , Mr. Adams quoted from the last balancq-sheet, which showed a total of. 244 members. Mr. Westbrooko liad furtlier stated that there were forty Unions affiliated 'to the Trades and Laboul Couiicil, and sixteen unafOliato'd. ' 'Air. Westbrooko could only name twerityniue aiiiliated unions, and the Labour Departmoht says that there aro altogether eighty-tlirce Unions in the Wellington labour district." • •

''Our principal grievance is that tlio Trades and Labour Council is run by the paid secretaries. Two or three secretaries of tlio big unions ,can got together and make practically a close corporation. For tholast two years there has-ueou considerable discontent over this question. Our Union would bo quite prepared to. return to tlio Council if the meetings were thrown:'open to the Press." . . ■ . '
