' KIWITEA COUNTY COUNCIL. \ ■ Tho monthly , mooting of the Kiwitea County Council was held at Kimbolton'on Saturday. Thero wero present: Messrs. Carman (chairman), Short, : Brnco, M'Nealo, M'lntyre, Giithrio, Fowler, and Morton. Councillor Bruce reported that at a mooting of ratepayers interested , in ' tho closing , of tho Orona Road, Bcaconsfiold township, hold in the Cheltenham Hall' on December I<}; a resolution in favour of closing the-road-'was carried. Tho County Clork reported: that £1-65 16s. lid. had ; beon recoived in rates, etc., since last meeting. Tho general account at tho bank had a credit or-£242 15s. od., and tho accounts to bo passed for payment were account,' £'122 Is. 2d.; land funds account,. £•!'4s.; loans, £52 14s, 3d. The Commissioner of-Crown ,Lands wrote suggesting that the Council i should' apply for Section 5,-: Block lV,"Apiti, as a. reservo for free accommodation for cattle •travelling from Rangiwahiu. .Tho Council adopted the following report of the Works .Committee:—That the road overseer he appointed dog tax, collector at Cd. por dog; that a strong deputation go to Wellington to obtain nil explanation from the Land Board in reference to tho deficit of £1000 in ' the thirds; that tho Council Offices ;be closed from December 21 to January 17; that heavy traffic fees bo enforced. Apropos the the question of tho action taken by tho Gm'crnment in confiscating over £1000 of deferred-thirds, due on lands leased from the Crown, which, it had been understood, were available for inime'diato expenditure was discussed, and it was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Guthrio, seconded by Councillor M'Neale, that the Land Board be written to, asking for an oxplanation ro thn confiscation of ovor £1000 thirds which were being held bv this Council for, almost immediato expondituro.

Tho/.Kimbolton branch of tho Farmers' Union had before it the following report, which was adoptod :—Sinco last meeting the chief 'business dono ; has been the etarting of an agitation in favour of a, railway to Kimbolton. This has mot with' great' success, and the Committee set up to arrange the matter is working assiduously in tho matter. A canvasser has been nppointed to got the.information needed from farmers who have not yet .applied. It is thn intention to proceed to, wait upon tho.Minister and bring the matter before him. The Chairman road a'circular lie had received from tho executive of the Fanners' Union in roferßiico to the Slienrers' Union dispute. It was decided to take steps to oppbso the' domnml. It was- decided that Mr. Pryor, of Wellington, bo askeil to act for tho farmers in tho Arbitration Court proceedings, and that an additional levy bo mado to cover any expense incurred. Mr. Frank M'Govern, who has for five or six years been stationed in the local branch of the' Bank of New South Walps, has received' promotion in the nature of an appointment to tho bank's Ciisborno branch, and will shortly leave for there.
Father. O'Mcava, who left hero, some sis months, ago for ,a holiday trip to Ireland, and has returned to Foilding, says ho found things in a very bad way in Ireland; the poverty of tho .working classes being heartrending.
