Pitoitoi has been purchased by Mr. ?.• Ire-' dale to trade between Waitara, Tongnporuhi, Awakino, Harrison's Beach, Waikawau, Shearer's Bay, and Marakopa. The steamer, which; is thoroughly well found in every respect; "is'' in the command of Captain Williamson. She is very light draught, and will be able to work ports hitherto unserved by steam service. In the country, even as far north as' the Waikato River, there are possibilities for, trade which are scarcely yet realised. l Recently Auckland merchants have been exploit? ing the country and getting a footing for their wares, but there is no doubt that it can best be served from the southern end. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Paparoa loft London on tho afternoon of October 31, and, owing to a dense fog in the Thames, did not reach-Plymouth until- 10 o'clock on Saturday night. After embarking mails and passengers, the ship left again at midnight, November 2, for Teneriffo. After passing through tho Bay tho ship encountered a strong north-westerly gale, witn high seas, which lasted about thirty hours, and then line weather was*-carried as far as Santa Cruz, which was reached on the morning of November 8. After landing mails and passengers, the ship left for Capetown the same afternoon. Slight north-easterly and/ and south-easterly trades were experienced as far as 27deg.; from there into Table ■.'■Bay' strong winds and ,high seas. Tho vessel arrived at Table Bay on the evening of November 25; and a stay was made until noon of the following day, when, .after embarking mails and passengers, she left, for. Hobart. Tho Crozet Islands woro passed on December 2. From Capetown to Hobart moderate to strong westerly winds' and*.fairly: rough seas, at times, with generally fine weather,' were, experienced, /and Hobart was reached cember 17. The vessel has been engaged in the coastal service between Gisborno and 'Auckland during tho past two years. v The Union Company's steamer Manapouri is timed to leave Auckland on Tuesday, for Fiji, in place of the Hauroto, and when she returns her fruit consignment will bo only' for Wellington and the South. Tho first large American turbine steamed, tho Creole, recently left New York on : . her maiden trip to New Orleans. The Creole,is. one of three vessels of the same size and type built .by the Fpro Hivcr Shipbuilding Companv, but is the only one to be fitted ir«h turbines. She is «ott. long and 10,000 tons displacement. She steams 18t knots an hour with a cargo of 4500 tous, has 152 staterooms, and accommodation for 250 steerage passengers.
