James Lowis, a young mail, who had ploadod guilty to tho theft of a cheque for £4C 10s., tho -property of Robert Hannah and Company, was sot forward. Mr. C; H. Izard, who appoared on bohalf of prisoner, informed tho . Court that tho young man airived in tho Dominion in De-. cember 1905. From tho dato of his arrival until December last ho was in the employ of Mcsrs. Hannah and Company. Subsequently he.bocamo a nowspapor'runner. Ho was tempted to commit the offence owing to the fact that ho was in arrears. Ho cashed the cheque at tho London Piano Company's warehouse, whoro ho purchased a . piano valu6d'at £52 10s.,.paying a dbposifc of £15 and receiving the balance of £31 10s. in cash.. Charles Burnoy, aged 29 years, ■ who : bad pleaded guilty- to having.sent a .false tolegram., also to forgory and- uttering, intimated that he had nothing to say why sentence should not be passed upon him. It seems a pity for so young a man to have such a record;.
