An old Petone landmark, in the shape ot a picturesque hnt, standing on the foreshore, just opposite tho Wellington Woollen Company's factory,,and occupied by an old fisherman, was yesterday afternoon destroyed by fire. An alarm; given shortly aftor four o'clock,' summoned the Petone Fire Brigado to the scone, but, since there are no mains laid in that part the town, tho firemen could render no assistance. Being of wood, and ono of tho oldest buildings in Petono, tho hut was soon a heap of smoking embers. Fortunately there wero no other buildings near, so tho fire did not spread. Tho Fire Brigado was called out at 2.30 yesterday afternoon to a dwelling, 22-t Taranaki Street, occupied by Mr. Roudloy. Tho outbreak was a small. one, and was got under after some curtains, scrim, and papor in one of the bedrooms had been damaged.
