A NEW CAPITAL CITY.
■ 'Sir,—Now. is .the! tirno for Now. Zealandors to consider the question of'building a new capital'city.. Tho astounding growth of Wellington, during the last .decade,' and- its great commercial future, mean that it will require every inch of. space that can'be scoured. At tho present tho cost of land, rents, and living, is so high that it is impossible for the 'great .'majority of people to live under comfortable, circumstances, and what is 'going, to happen, say,-within the next twenty years ..when the population . increases bV3O ,or'4o'.per cent.? ; 'I- would' suggest that the l Government consider 'the building' of • a new-.capital 'city: inland,, and,no-better-site could be secured than that boujitry lyimr .between Palmerston Jiorth' and Feilding. ..Here'..tie\Govenuneit
could secure an enormous area of ground, build: ft beautiful garden city, and :;cll .nil building allotments at. rrnsonnblo rates (o 'the public. Tbe sale of the present Government • Riiildings in ' Wellington would more than bring in their cost, -and . pay for (lie erection of all Departmental buildings in the new capital. Tbe commercial importance of, Wellington will increase more rapidly by being tbe sea-, port for this large inland city, and the importance of the seat of Government being shifted inland will render the country more secure in war time. Before tbe erection nf the Parliament Ruildings is decided upon tho public should consider this question; it is certainly a rather large order, but the'idea has everything in its favour. —I am. etc., > AUCKLANDER.
